The Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is proposing to change extraction limits for groundwater in a number of regions in NSW and Victoria. In some cases, the changes will mean more water can be taken from underground aquifers for use by industry and agriculture.
Traditional Owners have a right to have our voices and perspectives included in decision making about how groundwater is used. In some cases, underground water sources have cultural significance. Access to groundwater could also help to support Aboriginal community and economic development. The map below shows key areas where annual extraction limits for groundwater areas may be increased. MLDRIN will co-host two workshops in January to provide Traditional Owners with a forum to communicate their views about the proposed changes. Traditional Owners whose Country is covered in the Western porous rock and Goulburn Murray groundwater areas are strongly urged to attend. Details of the workshops are:
